Be the Change that you would like to see in your Society! Success is not measured by what u have achieved but by what u have had to give up in order to get there! Some men are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust on them! Let no man despise thy youth but be an example unto the believers in word, conduct, conversation, love, faith and purity. (1 Timothy 4:12)

I was shocked to learn this morning of the passing of one of my dear friends and colleague, Akila Jacobs. The Accounts Manager had just brought in one of St. Maarten’s two dailies, 'The Today Newspaper'. He said, “Torana check this story perhaps you know this reporter”.

I casually glanced at the page not expecting to see that Akila took her last breath on Saturday night. I cried uncontrollably, refusing to be consoled by my co-workers who would not have known what a gem Akila was.

It has been two hours now since I read the devastating news and as I reminisce on the life of Akila, it is not surprising to know that she died doing what she loved to do best. As a media worker, Akila was unstoppable, to me she represented the zeal and charisma of budding journalists who refused to be intimidated, side-lined or insulted because of their youth and by extension lack of experience.

She saw every challenge as an opportunity to learn something new, grow and develop into the wonderful mother, friend and reporter that she had become.

Her smile was infectious, her laughter hilarious and her face was always a beacon on the Early Watch Show. She had the kind of personality that brimmed with hope, a characteristic I am sure she would have passed on to her most prized possession, her daughter.

Two days before I departed Guyana, Akila along with 2 of my closest friends hosted a farewell party for me at the Hotel Tower. We all made promises to each other. Akila kept hers, she communicated constantly and assisted in the hosting of my brainchild, The Miss Mocha Beauty & Intelligence Pageant. Even while away, I could still count on her to chaperone the girls, coordinate the public relations campaign and ensure that the pageant came off unhitched. She was dependable, energetic and full of ideas.

Last week I survived a hurricane and most communication channels were down but it was no excuse for me to neglect my friends. Akila’s death reminded me that I need to keep my real friends close wherever they may be in the Diaspora. In the words of Charles Caleb Colton ,"True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost."

Rest in peace my beloved friend
